Exploring Handmade ~ Holiday Shopping Event ~ Day 2

Hello and Welcome to Day 2 of the
Exploring Handmade Online Holiday Shopping Event!!
From what I'm hearing everyone enjoyed Day 1...exciting isn't it :)

Today I'd like to introduce you to some incredibly talented Crochet/Knitting Artisans, aka Textile Artisans. If you gave me a pair of knitting needles, I wouldn't have the slightest clue where to begin, much less be able to make such beautiful things. These ladies are miracle-workers with yarn!

First let's meet Jan from Jan Tanis Designs...
My career as an Interior Designer gave me the opportunity to work with Colors and Design. I like keeping busy and I've always been crafty...so why not share some of my God-given talent with others and use my developed talents in another manner. I am a Textile Artist, working in crochet, crocheting beautiful, snuggly and warm Hats, Scarves, Fingerless Gloves, Shawls (even Prayer Shawls) and Afghans. I work with Acrylic and Polyester yarns and one yarn in particular is an Acrylic-Polyester with Mohair and Sequins. I try to keep my Shop stocked with something of everything I make. I will also take Special Orders and usually have yarn in different colors available. I sell Afghan Crochet Patterns in my Shop, too.

I am an SRAJD (Self Representing Artist Jewelry Designer) Member #2972, too and I LOVE Designing and Making my own HandMade Jewelry and Rosaries. While shopping for beads to make all of my Jewelry and Rosaries, I decided I'd order extras and share them in my Bead Shop, too! I've also sewn for the better part of my life and while having my own Bridal Business for several years, I have sewn everything from Wedding Gowns to Window Treatments…so it only figures that there would be patterns and fabric in my Sewing Shop!

Jan is running a promotion for you during this event:
**** Everything in Jan's Shop has FREE Shipping - USA & CANADA Only ****

Here are some of the places you can find Jan and her work...

Now let's meet Sarah King of Windscry Designs...
I am a retired Special Agent that worked for the US Army as a civilian doing computer forensics. I worked abroad in Europe, as well as in combat zones. While I was in Kosovo in 2003 I got arsenic poisoning (we're not sure exactly how) and I spent 40 + days in military hospitals while they tried to figure out what was wrong. The Arsenic caused a rare disorder in my bladder, pain all over and my digestive system stopped completely. At the end of it, I ended up with a bum bladder and Fibromyalgia. I worked for 5 more years with these injuries and then finally in 2008 my Fibro and other problems had progressed so much that I was too ill to continue working. I couldn't even drive a car by the time I stopped because my hands hurt too much to hold the wheel!

We relocated to California from where we were living in Virginia and I began the long process of coming to terms with a total halt in a high speed career, and fought for my Social Security Disability and Worker's Compensation. I felt very much like I was living in a cocoon for about 2 years, and then in 2009, shortly after winning my fight with Social Security, I got pregnant! This was great news, since we'd been trying for a second child for about 7 years. I had my second daughter (Rowan) in July of 2010. I know some people get the baby blues but for me it was totally the opposite. I felt like I blossomed. I was back in the world and ready to do things that I'd wished I could do all of that time while I was in that demanding career track!

I began taking Jewelry classes and discovered that I had quite a knack for it, and had a great time making it. I also got serious about my crochet and have made a few really neat things, including a shawl which was included in an exhibit in Arcata, California.

I hope that you enjoy my work. My goal is to bring joy to myself and others, and to show other people with Fibromyalgia that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a way to balance those meds and slow the pain down, and get some functionality in your life back! Not every day is pain free for me, but I've come a long way since 2008. Best of all, I have met a lot of new friends, some of whom have fibro too, but all of them are very suppportive and understanding.

Here are some of the places you can find Sarah and her work...

And we have Aksinia Voronina of Happy Bee...
My name is Aksinia and I have been making art and craft since I was a child. I like creating things in different techniques such as knitting, sewing, needle felting, and other and it is hard to say which one I like more. Also I like the idea of recycling and reusing things and keep that in mind when I am working on current project. I find inspiration in vintage buttons, old children’s books, retro fabric, Scandinavian and Japanese design and of course beauty of nature.

I make hand knitted brooches (rabbits, cats, owls), knitted bracelets, rings with using junk mail and toys made of used machine-felted jerseys. All things that you see in my shop are made with love and one of a kind.

If you like something but it is not quite what you are dreaming of, you may order a special item.

Here are some of the places you can find Aksinia and her work...
Felt (a New Zealand based online marketplace): http://felt.co.nz/shop/nord

We also have Beata of Bayahta's Knit Creations...
I love to use freeform technique form knitting, crocheting and felting to create playful themes! Bayahta’s Knit Creations offers high quality custom knit, crochet, felted designs for children and adults.

Here are some of the places you can find Beata and her work...

And last but not least we have Latasha of Knitknacks...
I am a mother of 4 wonderful children. Currently live in Vermont. I am a Military wife so we move around every 3 years on average. I am English, but have lived in the states for over 12 years now. I am lucky to have my own studio/craftroom but my supplies migrate to the comfort of the couch on a regular basis :)

My craft, well it's eclectic lets say, I love all mediums and can't stick to one. It started with yarn, just hats and scarfs a few years back for gifts, after making 12 sets a friend suggested I do a craft fair, so like a crazy woman I prepared frantically for my first and never looked backed. It exploded from then on. It expanded to Jewelry making innocently enough just over a year ago, I wanted to make keychains/charms for knitted bags I was doing. But once you have the beads... :) and I have plans to play with polymer clay and resin real soon, when the season allows, this time of year is real busy for yarn :) Alot of what I do is custom orders when it comes to yarn, I make something it gets posted and then orders comes in for that one order in that particular item or in different sizes/colours.

The possibilities are endless and that is what I love about what we do.

Here are some of the places you can find Latasha and her work...

Did you enjoy Day 2? Hope so! I'm off to start preparing for Day 3 :) See you tomorrow with more great gift ideas!

Did you miss a day? It's easy to get caught up... we wouldn't want you to miss any goodies!!

Exploring Handmade ~ Holiday Shopping Event ~ Day 1

Hello and Welcome to Day 1 of the
Exploring Handmade Online Holiday Shopping Event!!

Are you ready to Occupy Wall Street (from the comfort of your home in your slippers)?
Are you ready to send a BOLD message to Congress, Corporate America and the 99%?
Are you ready to support Artisans and Small Businesses to send that message?
Excellent!!
So I guess that means you're also ready to find some really great gifts for yourself and your loved ones, huh?
Alright then let's go....
I'm very happy to see you here and hope you'll enjoy following along this 13 day event. I didn't have time to put out all my fancy decorations so please excuse the accommodations... I've been spending my time searching for handcrafts and artisans to introduce you to ;) Every day I'll show you a handcraft or two and some of the artisans that lovingly create items using that particular craft.

There are soooooo many benefits to buying handcrafted items direct from the artisans who make them. I discuss them in an article I wrote called "Why Buy Handmade Jewelry" ...... it ended up being about a whole lot more than jewelry ;) Artisans care about you and give a special touch to your items. We also give you custom one-on-one service and many ways to work with us. You'll notice most artisans are on facebook and twitter... we want to talk to you and share with you. Come join the fun and we'll show you just how amazing personalized service can be!

We're all pinching pennies and gift-giving budgets for sure aren't what they used to be. But the people you'll meet during this event make gorgeous things... truly special things... things that, even if they are the only gift you give or receive, will fill your holiday with meaning and love.... from our homes to yours.

So, take advantage of this opportunity... Do your shopping for your loved ones AND don't forget to use the Amazon Universal Wish List to help your loved ones shop for you! If you're not familiar with it, please read my previous post so you can use this useful tool.

I'd appreciate it if you would share this event with your family, friends and fans so they can enjoy it too :)

I wish you all a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous Holiday Season!

Thank you for coming by!
and
Thank you to everyone who is taking part in and promoting this event!

♥ Debi

Exploring Handmade ~ Holiday Shopping Event

Occupy Wall Street this Holiday Season AND Get Great Gifts

Need gifts for loved ones? Want to send Congress, Wall Street and Corporate America a message loud and clear? Want to do both at the same time?

I'm sure everyone's heard about the "Occupy Wall Street" movement and others like it around the world. Well, I'm hoping to start an Occupy Wall Street movement of my own to aid in global economic recovery... yup, BIG dreams :) How, you ask?

Well, we know Congress, Wall Street and Corporate America are NOT going to get us out of this mess. That's for sure. It's SMALL businesses like mine and those of other artisans and entrepreneurs that are going to do it.

We're all doing more with less so make the most of your hard-earned dollars this holiday season...let them do TRIPLE duty!! No matter what gift-giving holiday you're celebrating, you can Occupy Wall Street AND help our economy by shopping with handcraft artisans online and locally.

When you buy from individual designers, artists and other crafts people, you're supporting small businesses. You're supporting the business of the individual designer AND all the businesses...usually small businesses...that they do business with. And growing these small businesses is what will get our economy back on track and be instrumental in keeping it there! This applies in any country around the globe.

AND at the same time, you'll get truly unique and precious gifts for your family and friends that will make your holidays more meaningful. It's a win-win-WIN :) And I'm going to help you!

I'm going to be holding an Online Holiday Shopping Event... "Exploring Handmade" ...on my blog and facebook from November 16th thru November 28th... yup, right thru Black Friday, Small Business Saturday AND Cyber Monday!!

Each day of the event I'm going to introduce you to different handcrafts and some shops where you can find them. Then on Cyber Monday we'll quickly recap all the different types of handmade gifts you can choose from and you'll be ready to do your shopping...if you haven't already finished by then because I'm going to be showing you lots of great shops, beautiful items (often one-of-a-kind) and introducing you to some wonderful artisans that you can add to your gift-giving superstar arsenal!!

It's going to be lots of fun and you won't want to miss anything so be sure to follow along every day on the blog and Exploring Handmade Event Facebook Page, too. You can shop from the warmth and comfort of home (No mall traffic and chaos!!) in your pj's and slippers, and have your gifts delivered right to your door. Doesn't get any easier than that ;)

Excited? I am! If you want a little head start, head on over to my website and read my article "Why Buy Handmade Jewelry?" (http://www.designs-by-debi.com/why-buy-handmade-jewelry.html) which actually isn't only about jewelry. I think you'll find it interesting. And you can leave comments there too... tell us your thoughts and ideas about handmade gifts, ones you've given or received or about YOU if you're an artisan yourself!

I'm looking forward to celebrating all the wonderful Artisan Entrepreneur Small Businesses with you this Holiday season!! I'll see you for that  on the 16th.

In the meantime, my friend Jan from Jan Tanis Designs is holding a Stroll the Shops for Christmas event on her blog from November 1st - November 12th and she's sharing some really great stuff, too. If you'd like to join the stroll, just visit her blog at http://jt-jantom.blogspot.com. Have fun!

Oh and here's a handy tip you can use during these events (and anytime) to help with your holiday shopping AND help others shop for you...
Amazon.com has a service called the Universal Wish List that allows you to add items from ANY website to your Wish List on Amazon.com. The add-on is free to download. You can find it here... http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/universal/  Once you have the little button on your tool bar, you can quickly add items from any site!

If you're shopping with artisans on ArtFire.com, you'll see the "Add to Amazon Wish List" button right below the Add to Cart button on every item page.

You can make your Amazon Wish List searchable, print it, email it to family and friends and even share it on Facebook and Twitter. So it's super easy to compile your gift ideas in one place to make YOUR shopping easier. And it's the best way to get exactly what you want, too...LOVE that!!

So I'll see you back here on the 16th... don't worry I'll give you lots of gentle reminders so you don't forget ;) ...and then we're going to
1. Occupy Wall Street
2. Send a BOLD message to Congress and the 99%
3. Support Artisans and Small Business
AND
4. Get great gifts!!

Pssst...... Designs by Debi helpful hint...you're going to want to join my newsletter list before Wednesday November 9th.... just sayin ;) You can do it by going to my website...there's a sign-up box on the right side of every page.... or by clicking on the Newsletter Sign-Up tab on the Designs by Debi facebook page, You'll be glad you did and of course, if you don't, you won't know what you're missing ;)

Stroll the Shops for Christmas

Hello!

Has anyone been following Stroll the Shops for Christmas over on my friend Jan's blog? Have you heard about it? Jan is the owner and designer at Jan Tanis Designs and for the 3rd year in a row she's hosting her Stroll the Shops for Christmas Event on her blog at http://jt-jantom.blogspot.com/. The event runs from November 1st - 12th and she'll be introducing 2 artisans each day of the event. I was one of the featured artisans yesterday.

It's a really great event... makes you feel like the good 'ole days shopping in a quaint little village of shops back when Christmas wasn't so commercialized and what really mattered was family and meaningful presents (not things like iPods). She's got all the decorations up, even has Christmas music playing! She's created a fabulous atmosphere so grab a cuppa your favorite coffee or hot chocolate, put on your pj's and fuzzy socks and go on over. You'll love it ♥

I'll tell you a little about it but to really enjoy the full effect, you need to go over to her blog and experience it for yourself.

Day 1 of Stroll the Shops Showcased the work of
Kimberly Nicole and Jan Tanis

Kimberly Nicole (aka: Nikki) is the owner and designer at Bastille Bleu Lampwork. She makes gorgeous lampwork beads and jewelry and she's a wonderful person. Here's a couple examples of her work... she made the jewelry AND the beautiful glass beads!

Jan is the owner and designer at Jan Tanis Designs and the hostess of this event. She makes gorgeous jewelry, rosaries and crocheted items and is also a wonderful person. Here's a couple things Jan has made...

Day 2 of Stroll the Shops Showcased the work of
Elizabeth Rintala and Debra Beach

Beth is the owner and designer at Gemworks by Beth. She is a jewelry designer who makes all one-of-a-kind pieces primarily with gemstones. Here's a couple of her creations...

Debra is the owner and designer at String Bead Studio. She makes wonderfully creative, or as she calls them, eclectic and quirky, jewelry. She just opened up her shop on ArtFire and we wish her much success! Here are a couple of her designs...

Day 3 of Stroll the Shops Showcased the work of
Debi Auger (Me!) and Faye Metcalf

Well, you already know me, so let me introduce you to Faye!

Faye and her daughter Lesli own Ye Olde Chandler where they make fabulous soy candles and soaps. I haven't tried them yet, but people who have say that Faye's candles are better than Yankee's.... and they come in over 80 scents!! Some samples of their work...

Day 4 of Stroll the Shops is today and is Showcasing the Work of
Sherri Stokey and Amy Kuczewski

Sherri is the owner and designer at Knot Just Macrame. She makes the most amazing, detailed jewelry using macrame technique. The intricacy of her designs absolutely blows me away. See for yourself...

Amy, the Flamekeeper, is the owner of Torch by Night Lampwork. She makes fabulous lampwork glass beads and some jewelry from time to time. Aren't her beads delicious?

Tomorow will be Day 5 of the Stroll. Can't wait to see what talented artisans Jan's going to introduce us to!! Go on over and take in the whole experience for yourself... you'll be glad you did! And most of the artisans are offering specials to visitors so be sure to go look ;)

Hope you enjoyed the re-cap of the first 4 days! I'll be back tomorrow with some exciting news for you :)
